Train Station

Nate had an interview at one of the campus dinning halls today, so I dropped him off and took advantage of the first hour free parking downtown. This was the perfect excuse to stop in at The Black Market, a consignment shop loved by many in the Lincoln area. Surprisingly enough, I left empty handed. I did see a leather coat I may have to go back to pick up. I just wasn't sure about it, and I didn't have a second opinion there to help me make a decision.

After the interview I talked the hubs into going a few blocks over to the train station to get a few pictures. It was so bright out that the lighting really sucks, but these two look decent. At least to me they do, but a professional photographer I am not.

Pool Party

Yay!!! The overcast day left behind by Friday's morning showers did ended up burning off, and we where able to have Lyla's pool party after all. I will admit I was a little worried about it in the morning, but by the time I got off work the only things I had to worry about was going to Sam's Club to finish my snack food shopping in time. In the end it turned out just fine, and Lyla was very happy swimming, and opening presents. The item that registered highest on the excitement scale?!? Neon pink, high top Chucks. I'm sure you will see her sporting them around the blog posts soon enough. They were cheap too. We got them on our vacation for $12.00 or close to that. I love how easy it is to please her with gifts. Besides, the big stuffed dog we gave her on her actual birthday everything was practical gifts like clothes, shoes, and coloring books. Leave it to the grandparents to spoil her with dolls, sandboxes, and Little People play sets.

I've been debating about the color of this "dress" since I got it last summer. I thought it was black, and maybe it was whenever it was brand new. I decided today that it is definitely navy blue now. Oh well for a second hand item it still looks in pretty good condition. By the way I say dress in quotes, because, Express labeled it a dress. However, there is no way I could get away with wearing it as a dress. So a tunic top it is for me!

After deciding at work that the tunic was in fact navy I realized I was wearing black and silver shoes. You can't tell that from the pictures they just look black. Oh well. Kendi from Kendi Everyday was talking about fashion rules and breaking some regarding color combos. Without knowing it I did the same as her and mixed black and navy blue. I think we both pulled it off without looking like a bruise. Would you tell me if I did? 

How do you feel about "fashion rules"? What are some of your favorite rules to break, or color combo no-nos to be a rebel and rock anyway? Like the saying goes, "rules are meant to be broken." I think the fashion world that makes these rules would be quite boring if designers and style savvy consumers didn't bend, break, or bust right through them.

A Bit of Lace

I irritated my eyes too much yesterday swimming in my contacts, so I had to break out the glasses today. Hopefully my eyes will be back to normal tomorrow morning. It isn't that I think I don't look good in my glasses. I just find life more comfortable without them. I also am not a big fan of how my glasses photograph. Oh well.

Today, I'm wearing my pencil skirt again. Last time I wore it with flats, and wasn't thrilled with how it looked. See Here. I have yet to get a new pair of black pumps, so I wore my black and silver spectator heels this go around. I like it better with a heel, but these still don't fit the bill. I think it has to do with the hight of the heel, or lack there of in this case. I really like the lace back on the tank top. It adds a little something special.

Attempting To Thrift Shop

We have three, maybe four, thrift stores in town. In the past I have never found anything I liked, however, I have never had the patience to dig through everything. Most of it seems to be in poor condition, or not even close to the right "age group" I'm looking for. In my attempt to add more flare to my wardrobe, and still come in under budget I will try it again.

Here is my shopping list

• belts-brown and black skinny belts, brown woven belt, and something in a fun color
• dresses- many different styles
• accessories- fun, unique pieces that don't scream senior citizen
• jackets and cardigans
• skirts- pencil skirts and full skirts preferably some sort of fun pattern

What I came home with

• black shift dress
• khaki pencil skirt
• black mini skirt-The waist is a little big on me, so it sits lower on my hips. Thus making it a little less of a mini skirt
• ruffled plaidish short sleeve button up (the description isn't great, but the pic will follow)

After trying on dozens of pieces these are the winners. I had a blast shopping with Nate. As expected we had a lot of hideous pieces to laugh at and dig through. Overall I think the trip was successful. Since, Nate was so patient with me I thought I would include him in the post with the Hubby's pick. You might think of course the mini skirt won him over, but nope. He picked the shorts as his fave item.

Will I do this again? Yes, but I think I will mostly stick with the Black Market and Plato's Closet. They buy and sell gently used name brand clothing and accessories. That my friend is a low budget fashion blogger's dream. Now a question for you. Do you thrift shop? If so, where?
